Baby left unattended in Mass. YMCA

SALEM, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) A Mass. couple was horrified to learn their 10-month-old child was left alone by babysitters at the YMCA in Salem.

Katie and Andrew Turcotte went to the YMCA to exercise on Tuesday and dropped their son, Kyle, off with the YMCA's babysitters. This has been a weekly ritual since Kyle was born and the family began to feel comfortable with the babysitters.

When Katie returned to pick up Kyle, the babysitters were nowhere to be found.

"I opened the door, it was unlocked, the lights were off, everything was cleaned up," said Katie. "I looked around, I was like 'hello, hello' thinking maybe someone's in the back."

Before Katie could make it to the back, she noticed her son sitting in a stroller facing the wall. He was completely alone, unbuckled, and sound asleep with his bottle.

Babysitters had left Kyle when they closed up the room for the day. The Y says Kyle may have been alone for about five minutes.

The couple filed a police report and after they told the Y officials what happened, they reported the incident to the DCF. The Y then fired the two staff members involved. The organization also sent a letter home with parents whose children attend day school at the Y to let them know what happened.

Katie and Andrew say they're determined to make other parents more aware in hopes of preventing a similar incident from happening to another innocent baby.

While the family says they are satisfied with the Y's response, they say they won't go back there again. The Y credited the family's account for three months, but they say that can't begin to make up for the five minutes their child was left alone.
