Authorities: Suspect in Irish detective's murder may be hiding in Boston area

BOSTON — Five years ago, an Irish detective was ambushed and killed in the line of duty. Now, the search for one of the suspected killers is happening in Boston.

Irish authorities believe a gang of five people was involved in the murder. Three of them, according to reports, fled to the United States and detectives think one of them could be in the Boston area.

Irish Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe was 41 years old, a husband, and father of two when he was shot to death during a robbery on Jan. 25, 2013.

The brazen murder took place in the parking lot of a credit union.

Detective Donohoe and another officer were providing escort for credit union officials as they were transporting money when suddenly, they were ambushed.

The scene of the crime was just across the border from Northern Ireland where authorities believe the violent gang was based - and where officials believe the gang was protected after the murder.

The murder of Donohoe shocked the area and led to promises to track down all five suspects.

In January, on the fifth anniversary of the case, Garda authorities issued an appeal for help.

"The key to solving his callous and brutal murder remains in the local community and - most particularly - those people who know who the killers are," said Donall O’Cualain, Acting Garda Commissioner.

In recent weeks, a reward flier for information surfaced in the Boston area - Dorchester and Quincy. The Boston FBI tells Boston 25 News reporter Bob Ward that it is offering assistance to Garda.

One suspect in the case was picked up in New York. Another - who was in the Boston area - is now back in Ireland.

The search for the third is now taking place, in the Irish communities of Boston.

In a statement, Garda "It is never too late to do the right thing. It is never too late to stand on the side of justice."

Irish authorities are not publicly identifying the suspect they believe could be in the Boston area.

According to reports, there is a $50,000 Euro reward on the table.
