ATF offering $5K reward in Marshfield pipe bomb investigation

MARSHFIELD, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of whoever made or was in possession of the pipe bomb found in Marshfield late last month. The state’s Arson Watch Program is also offering a reward of up to $5,000.

"ATF's immediate concern is public safety. We are confident the public can assist in providing critical information which will ultimately result in arrests," said ATF Special Agent in Charge Daniel J. Kumor.

The pipe bomb was found in late April on Ocean Drive. Witnesses described the device as square in shape, wrapped in electrical tape with a cord coming out of it, attached to a 9-Volt battery.

A resident called 911 after spotting the unattended device. Fire trucks and police cruisers could be seen around the Brant Rock section of the town, as well as the State Police Bomb Squad. The device was so sensitive to shock and friction that it exploded while the bomb squad was performing diagnostics and attempting to render the device safe. No one was injured.

Officials believe the device may have been attached to a vehicle and fallen off in Marshfield.

Police reminded people that if they see a suspicious package that might be a bomb, to call authorities because simply moving a bomb could set it off.
