At least 15 displaced by massive apartment fire in Worcester

WORCESTER, Mass. — At least 15 people have been displaced by a large apartment fire that broke out in Worcester early Friday morning.

Few details have been released, but Boston 25 News learned the fire broke out inside the building at 74 West St.

“The first arriving companies arrived to a basement fire, and that basement fire quickly spread into the pipe chase right up into the attic,” Worcester fire Chief Michael Lavoie said.

Luckily, Lavoie said, everyone was able to safely exit the building and no injuries have been reported.

“Everyone got out OK,” he said. “We have probably 15 displaced right now.”

The Red Cross is assisting those who were displaced by the fire.

Lavoie said fire crews dealt with some cold conditions while trying to fight the fire. He said crews had to deal with three frozen fire hydrants, but crews were soon able to get plenty of water.

Firefighters were ordered out of the building, but will go back inside to investigate once the all-clear is given.

Fire crews from surrounding communities assisted with the fire, including the city of Auburn, which is covering other calls in Worcester while crews extinguish the blaze.
