Andover hockey coaches on leave during 'coaching method' investigation

ANDOVER, Mass. — Three Andover High School boys hockey coaches, including the Varsity Head Coach, have been placed on leave following an investigation into their coaching methodologies, according to the Andover High School Principal Phillip Conrad.

Conrad, along with the Athletic Director William Martin, determines whether the high school's athletic programs operate consistent with the district and MIAA policies.

However, Principal Conrad has informed Superintendent Sheldon Berman regarding his decision to launch an investigation and place the hockey coaches on leave.

The principal received information that certain coaching methodologies may have been used for the hockey program, which, if true, are not in the best interests of the student athletes.

A source told Boston 25 News the incident involved the coaches not allowing players to drink water during a 90 minute practice.

None of the coaches are school district staff members.

The coaches were immediately placed on leave pending the investigation. Junior Varsity hockey coach Peter Loring has been named interim Varsity head coach.

Members of the varsity hockey team were notified of the situation this morning, and the school district also sent a message home to parents of the student athletes.

Andover High School has designated certain employees of the high school — the principal, assistant principal, school social worker, and school psychologist — as points of contact for any student with questions or concerns.

“The safety and well-being of our students is our most important priority, and I am disheartened to hear of the allegations against members of our coaching staff,” Principal Conrad said.
