MBTA: Signal issue resolved, all trains to go through South Station

BOSTON — After a commuter headache Thursday, the MBTA says the signal issue that prevented trains from going through South Station has been resolved.

SIGNAL ISSUES CAUSE MASSIVE DELAYS

An Amtrak signal issue created the problem around 5 a.m. Thursday, though MBTA officials say they were not informed until nearly 6 a.m.

Due to the signal issue, only a limited amount of trains were able to get in or out of South Station. Passengers were asked to board away from the downtown area.

The problem continued into Thursday night, with route changes causing massive delays. The MBTA designated alternative stations where passengers could board the Commuter Rail trains.

Amtrak apologized for the delays in a statement Thursday, saying that engineering forces were immediately called to fix the problem and that, in the meantime, crews were manually operating the switches, leading to delays for arriving and departing trains.

ISSUES RESOLVED FRIDAY MORNING

Just before 5:30 a.m. Friday, a spokesperson for the MBTA told FOX25's Michael Henrich that the signal issue had been fixed and that all trains would depart and arrive into South Station on the regular schedule.

A spokesperson for Amtrak said that crews worked overnight to fix the problem.
