After court hearing, Revere apartment complex agrees to fix elevators

REVERE, Mass. – The property management company for a Revere high rise apartment building was taken to court by city officials after a Boston 25 News report on elevators that had been out of service for weeks.

Two weeks ago, Boston 25 News was contacted about the problem by a resident at Ocean Shore Tower, and while we were at the building we discovered that emergency responders were carrying residents with disabilities up and down the stairs during emergencies.

“It's very concerning, it's the type of stuff that keeps me up at night,” Fire Chief Christopher Bright said.

In court Friday, the management company agreed to get the elevators fixed and inspected in all three of the buildings.

“The city didn't need to take us to court, but we welcome the chance to be here because as you saw, now we're getting a lot of things done,” William Baldiga, legal counsel for Waters Edge, said.

Baldiga said the problem isn’t on their end, because they’ve been waiting for an elevator inspection for months.

“The Elevators have been working, we just can't turn them on,” he said.

However, an attorney for the City of Revere said that is not the case.

“The city does disagree that the companies have been waiting for the city,” Peter Brown said. “The city has been doing everything it can, working with non-profit entities, anybody that would help these tenants for several weeks.”

Until the elevators are working, Waters Edge agreed to house tenants in hotels. Some residents told Boston 25 News they’re skeptical the problem will get fixed.

“They can come and inspect them, it's not going to change anything. They're still old parts, they still don't work,” resident Dianne Bonia said.

The elevators are undergoing inspection and the attorney for Waters Edge told Boston 25 News he believes they will be working by this weekend. He said that all of the elevators will be replaced with brand new ones in the coming months.
