ACLU calls for independent investigations into FBI shooting of Todashev

(MyFoxBoston.com) – The American Civil Liberties Union is calling on state officials to launch independent investigations into the FBI shooting death of Ibragim Todashev.

Todashev, a former friend of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects, was killed by the FBI during an investigation. He was shot and killed by an FBI agent in Orlando, Fla., in May.

Officials claim Todashev was about to give details and possibly confess to a triple murder in Waltham that bombing suspect number one Tamerlan Tsarnaev may have been involved in. But his family and close friends say he was never interviewed about the matter and that his case was not handled professionally.

There are conflicting reports about whether or not Todashev was armed on the night of his death. His family claims that law enforcement may have used excessive force.

In a letter to Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley, the ACLU of Massachusetts urged the AG to assign the state Civil Rights Division the task of investigating the role of Massachusetts State Police in the shooting death. The ACLU of Florida simultaneously issued a request to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to conduct an investigation into the role of Orlando police officers in the incident.
