About 100 charged in New England drug raids

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) -- Federal, state and local authorities have arrested about 100 people across southern New England accused of being involved in trafficking heroin and cocaine from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

Authorities say hundreds of law enforcement officers executed scores of federal and state arrest warrants Wednesday in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Puerto Rico and Rhode Island.

Federal authorities say the arrests were part of a "massive" law enforcement operation that also included the Secret Service, Drug Enforcement Administration, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Connecticut State Police and local police departments.

Additional defendants were previously arrested during the investigation and several individuals are being sought. The arrests stem from a 15-month investigation that included controlled drug purchases.
