6-year-old gets more birthday cards than all of Foxborough in 1 day

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (MYFoxBoston.com) – Hundreds of cards and packages from around the world were delivered to Danny Nickerson for his birthday.

Danny, who just turned 6 Friday, is from Foxborough and loves to get mail. For his birthday his one wish was to receive lots birthday cards.

Turning 6 is a big deal to Danny because in October of last year he was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an inoperable and chemotherapy resistant brain tumor. Less than 10 percent of patients diagnosed with DIPG survive past 18 months of diagnosis.

In order for Danny’s wish to come true, his mother took to Facebook and asked people to send her son a birthday card. The post was quickly shared, and not only Danny’s friends and family sent him cards this year, but hundreds of people from around the world are making sure that he has the best birthday possible.

On Thursday alone, he received more mail at the Foxborough post office than the entire town combined, which took four trucks and a U-haul to bring home. They had to leave three pallets of mail behind to pick up later. And more came in Thursday evening at a special party just for him.

Danny spent the entire night dancing with his cousins at Waxy O'Connors in Foxborough.

"Danny's loving every moment of this, so thank you," his father, Daniel Jamieson, said.

His family's enjoying it too, calling the mail a welcomed distraction to the life they've known since Danny was first diagnosed.

"It's remarkable how many people from across the world can come together and care about one child that's really sick," Daniel said.

Danny arrived at the post office by fire truck on his actual birthday, and jumped right into action. He took a short break for some cake and a song and took off again to open more cards, and his parents love to see him so happy. Cards and packages from perfect strangers are helping the family cope. Their basement is already filled with cards and that will keep them busy for a while.

And they do promise to open each and every one.

And it doesn't stop there, on Saturday, first responders helped Danny celebrate at Gillette Stadium where he watched the Patriots practice and met some players.
