6-year-old calls 911 after dog, grandma fall through ice

SALEM, N.H. — The Salem, New Hampshire Fire Department is commending a 6-year-old girl who called 911 after her grandmother fell through the ice on a frigid lake.

Spook the dog hasn't been too interested in going outside since Monday, when he fell through the ice of Millville Lake, behind his house in Salem, NH.

Ariana Semperit was just getting home when she noticed something was up. She spotted her little dog in the water and her grandma immediately went out onto the ice after him.

After Ariana's grandmother fell through the ice, her mother tried to help her out with a kayak - then called to Ariana to call 911.

"They asked me... what was the address, what was the number you're calling from," said Ariana.

"It was terrifying being so cold and not knowing if we could get to the dog... it was a little bit crazy," said Ariana's mom.

Ariana'a grandmother made it back to shore with Spook right before the fire department arrived, and thankfully, they are both OK. The Assistant Fire Chief says Ariana did exactly what they tell people to do in this situation.

"She stayed on the phone with 911, gave them info, updates and stuff, so she did a great job," said Asst. Chief Larry Best.

While it was a spooky experience for everyone involved, her mom couldn't be more proud.

"She's awesome, did the right thing. She's super smart," said Ariana's mom.

As for Spook, his family thinks he'll be more of an indoor dog from now on.
