Updated:SHIRLEY, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- An altercation at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley sent five staff members to the hospital, along with one inmate.
On Wednesday afternoon, an inmate barricaded himself in a room with a staff member, according to the Massachusetts Department of Correction.
The center's emergency response team was activated, and ended the incident by using "less than lethal and chemical responses." Mass. DOC did not elaborate on what exactly those responses were.
Both the inmate and the staff member barricaded in the room were taken to local hospitals for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Five other corrections center staff members were also taken to the hospital to be treated in relation to the incident.
