NEW BEDFORD (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - A 4-foot, 25 pound alligator was taken from an abandoned New Bedford apartment on Tuesday.
Animal Control officers responded to the South End apartment after receiving a call on Monday night regarding abandoned animals in the apartment. When police arrived the next morning, not only did they find the cayman alligator, but they also found a pitbull, reports South Coast Today.
Animal Control officers told the paper that this is not the first time they have found an alligator in a New Bedford home; however, it is the largest one.
The apartment was reportedly covered in feces, and there was no water for the dog.
Richard Fumo, the former tenant of the apartment, will be charged with animal cruelty and animal abandonment.
Animal Control officers also said that cayman alligators should not be considered pets and should definitely be living in the wild.
