25-year-old man arrested, charged with father's murder in Dedham

DEDHAM, Mass. — A 25-year-old man is accused of killing his father early Tuesday morning because he was annoyed, according to Dedham police.

Alex Anderson appeared in Dedham District Court Tuesday to faces murder charges after police say he called 911 around 2 a.m. and confessed to his father's death.

Police say Paul Anderson, 59, was taken to the hospital with traumatic injuries, where he later died. According to police, he was stabbed and bludgeoned with a hammer while he slept.

Neighbors say the son and father have shared the home for years.

"My wife just got up in the middle of the night and said something not good's going on next door," neighbor Neal Coleman told FOX25.

The flashing lights that woke Coleman and his wife were swarming around the Andersons' home after police said a man called 911 saying he had just killed his father.

Alex Anderson was taken into custody shortly after.

"I knew the father, the father was a great guy. They both seemed like great guys, you know? He's a single father bringing up his son," Coleman said.

Prosecutors described the gruesome crime in court.

"He admitted to kneeling on his father's neck at one point in time with his right knee and punching his father," prosecutor Craig Kowalski said.

In the past, prosecutors say Paul had taken out a restraining order against his son. They also said Alex had a "minor criminal history."

Alex Anderson pleaded not guilty to first degree murder, though police say he confessed during his arrest and provided some insight into why he may have suddenly snapped.

"He did admit his father aggravated him recently," Kowalski said.

The judge ordered Anderson to be held without bail.
