2 snowshoers from Boston missing after avalanche in Canada

LAKE LOUISE, Alberta — Two snowshoers from Boston are missing after an avalanche in the Lake Louise area of Alberta, Canada.

According to Parks Canada, the two people did not check out of the hotel where they were staying, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were called.

RCMP found the vehicle the two people had rented near a trail head in an area that had recently experienced an avalanche.

“There are snowshoe tracks leading into the debris without any tracks leading out,” Parks Canada Spokesperson Tania Peters said.

Parks Canada tells FOX25 the avalanche danger is still high, preventing a recovery effort.

“If the avalanche danger is a high danger still, they can't send rescuers into the area it will put them at risk,” Gerry Kaelbein, a member of the Blue Hills ski patrol trained in avalanche recovery, said.

The identities of the two snowshoers have not been released.

“The thoughts of all of Parks Canada staff are with the family and friends of these individuals and we are making every effort to get into the area and conduct a search as safely and efficiently as possible,” a Parks Canada spokesperson said.
