2 elderly men killed in Milton house fire

MILTON, Mass. — Two elderly men were killed early Monday morning when a fire swept through their Milton home.

The blaze was reported around 12:30 a.m. on Elias Lane. Fire officials said that when crews arrived at the scene the flames weren’t noticed, but the smoke was described as intense.

“From the street (we) didn’t notice any heavy smoke in the building,” Milton fire Chief Jack Grant said. “The fire hadn’t vented itself, so on arrival they didn’t see it.”

Official said two people were able to escape the burning home and they told first responders that two men were trapped inside.

CPR was performed on one of the men pulled from the home, but he was pronounced dead. The other man was found dead inside the home.

The victims have been identified by the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office as Kenneth Guscott, 91 and Leroy Whitmore, 87.

Fire officials said they believe the fire started in a bedroom on the second floor, but they’re working to determine how it started.

There were working smoke detectors in the home, according to investigators.
