2 Georgia police officers shot during drug raid

CRAWFORD COUNTY, Ga. — Two Byron, Georgia, police officers are recovering after being shot while serving a warrant at a house in Crawford County.

A multi-jurisdictional drug task force was serving a warrant on a drug case, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The GBI tells WSBTV.com that eight police officers arrived at a home on Highway 42 in Fort Valley about 2:10 a.m. Monday.

Five officers went into the house, while three remained along the perimeter.

The officers reportedly knocked on the door before going inside the house. There, they found a man who they said shot at the officers, striking two of them.

Officers returned fire, shooting and killing the suspect, according to the GBI.

GBI officials tell WSBTV.com that one of the officers was in surgery Monday morning. His injuries are serious but not life-threatening.

The other officer was treated at a local hospital and has been released.

One other person who was inside the house at the time is the girlfriend of the suspect, according to the GBI.

A 1-month-old girl was also inside the house but was not hurt.
