17-year-old Malden teen charged in shooting

MALDEN (AP) - A 17-year-old Malden youth is held on charges that he shot another 17-year-old in the back as the victim rode on a bicycle.

Tyrell Berberena Jr. pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Malden District Court to charges including armed assault to murder and possession of a high-capacity firearm. Berberena is scheduled for a dangerousness hearing Friday.

The other teen was shot Monday as he was riding through the parking lot of the Sun Kong restaurant. Prosecutors said Tuesday he is in critical condition, but stable, at a hospital. His name has not been made public.

District Attorney Gerry Leone called it said "another tragic example of young people resorting to violence to settle a dispute." Prosecutors said the circumstances remain under investigation.
