15-year-old hit by Commuter Rail train in Concord dies

CONCORD, Mass. — A 15-year-old boy has died less than 24 hours after being hit by a Commuter Rail train in Concord.

Police tell Boston 25 News that Dylan Smyth was riding his bike across the tracks when he was hit around 7:50 p.m.

"It's very hard and it's hard for my kids and all of their friends to process," said Karen Young, Dylan's mother. "I have a daughter who is a year ahead of Dylan and a son, both of them make this kind of commute all the time and it's sort of upsetting to know that this could happen, what happened I don't know."

Passengers say Dylan was accompanied by another teen who allegedly tried to stop him.

It's unclear whether he didn't hear or see the train after transit police said the train was blaring the horn and the lights were on as it approached the station.

According to Concord-Carlisle High School Principal Michael Mastrullo, Dylan was a sophomore.

Dylan was initially taken to a local hospital then flown to Mass. General Hospital Friday night in life-threatening condition. His death was announced late Saturday evening.

Grief counselors are available for students, parents and faculty members.

According to police, this was a tragic accident and there are no suspicions of foul play. The accident is still under investigation.
