13-year-old boy dies after hitting tree while skiing

Family and friends are mourning a 13-year-old boy who died one day after slamming into a tree while skiing in New Hampshire.

John Lynch, of Kingston, New Hampshire, was skiing at Cranmore Mountain Resort in North Conway Feb. 22 when he crashed into a tree.

Officials said John was wearing a helmet at the time.

The ski patrol was able to evacuate John off the mountain and take him to a local hospital to be treated for injuries, but he was pronounced dead the following day.

He was an eighth grade student at Sacred Hearts School in Bradford, Mass.

"John made a lasting and profound impression on those he met," his obituary said. "His smile could light up any room and his soul was filled with immense innocence and kindness."

John's funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sacred Hearts Church in Bradford.
