12 evacuated from Methuen fire

METHUEN, Mass. — Up to a dozen people were evacuated from a building in Methuen after a massive fire broke out early Saturday morning.

A mother and a baby had to be treated for smoke inhalation and crews remained on scene late into the morning.

The mother and the baby actually lived next door, but the smoke was so thick coming from the building the neighbors had to be taken to the hospital.

Officials say the fire started on the second floor and flames were shooting out the roof early in the morning hours.

Methuen Fire Deputy Chief Scott Sullivan said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The second floor was empty and all of the residents were evacuated from the first floor.

People were sleeping at the time and one firefighter says he doesn't think the smoke alarms were working.

Sullivan told FOX25 it was thanks to the quick action of two police officers that allowed everyone to get out safely.

"The two officers went it and got 10-12 people out before our arrival. The fire was already in the second floor and roof and had a pretty good head start," Sullivan said.

Sullivan said three dogs also got out safely.
