• Boston road closures, detours during week of July 4th

    Mass. State Police and the City of Boston released this list of road closures ahead of the Fourth of July festivities around Boston and closer to the Esplanade, where fireworks and concert will be performed. State police have announced that due to ongoing construction, people will not be allowed to watch the fireworks on the Longfellow Bridge this year.

    July 2:

    Beginning at 7 a.m., no parking will be allowed on Mugar Way from Arlington to Charles Street until 6 a.m. on July 5.

    July 3:

    The right hand travel lane of Storrow Drive westbound will be closed at 6 a.m.

    At 7 a.m.:

    The Esplanade walkway adjacent to the Charles River will be closed to pedestrians and bicyclists front he Community Boat Club to the front of the concession stand. The Oval area will be closed for Pops rehearsal and reopen at 5 p.m.

    At 9 a.m.:

    Esplanade curbside will be reserved for permitted bus parking from the Longfellow Bridge westbound to the Fielder Footbridge. There will be no public parking along Storrow Drive during rehearsals or the concert.

    At 12 p.m.:

    Berkeley Street, Clarendon Street, and Back Street will be closed until the end of the fireworks on July 4.


    At 3 p.m. (or a time determined by Mass. State Police officials):

    Storrow Drive closes to westbound traffic from Lee Pool to the Bowker Overpass. Traffic will be diverted to Charles Street Circle. Westbound traffic can enter Storrow Drive westbound by traveling down Charles Street to Beacon Street and to the westbound entrance at the Bowker Overpass.

    Arlington Street exit from the Storrow Tunnel eastbound will be closed until 6 a.m. on July 5.

    Mugar Way at Beacon Street closes to all traffic until the early morning hours of July 5. Pedestrians will be directed to Berkeley Street for entrance to the Esplanade.

    Berkeley Street at Beacon Street will be closed to vehicular traffic

    Storrow Drive eastbound closes and will be detoured at the Bowker Overpass. This will remain closed until July 5.

    July 4:

    At 12 a.m.:

    No parking allowed on either side of Memorial Drive from 450 Memorial Drive to the Longfellow Bridge.

    No parking allowed on Cambridge Parkway

    At 7 a.m.:

    Access to Storrow Drive westbound from Leverett Circle to Kenmore Square closes to traffic

    The right hand travel lane on Charles River Dam Road closes from Museum Way to Leverett Circle

    Storrow Drive exit ramp in the Tip O'Neill Tunnel closes to all traffic except emergency vehicles

    The Leverett Circle entrance to Storrow Drive West closes. Traffic allowed to travel on Msgr. O'Brien Highway to Cambridge and Martha Way to Boston

    No parking at Magazine Beach and Pool, Riverside Boat Club, and the MWRA pump station. No boat launching allowed in this area.

    Pedestrian footbridge at Charles Street Circle going to the Esplanade closes

    Fielder Footbridge from Beacon Street closes

    At 3 p.m.:

    No access to Storrow Drive westbound from Kenmore Square

    No access to Storrow Drive westbound from the Beacon Street on-ramp under the Bowker Overpass

    Storrow Drive eastbound is detoured at University Avenue

    At 4 p.m.:

    Longfellow Bridge closed to vehicular traffic. Pedestrians allowed on the downstream side. Bridge closes to pedestrians from 9 p.m. until the end of the fireworks. Pedestrians not allowed to watch the fireworks from the bridge.

    Memorial Drive closes to vehicular traffic from Mass. Ave to the Longfellow Bridge

    Main Street in Cambridge from Third Street to the Longfellow Bridge closes to vehicular traffic

    Wadsworth and Emerson Streets in Cambridge close to vehicular traffic

    Land Boulevard in Cambridge from Binney Street to Longfellow closes to vehicular traffic

    Hayward, Carlton, Charlotte's Way and Dock Streets in Cambridge close to vehicular traffic

    Access to One Memorial Drive only allowed with permit

    Mass. Ave Bridge closed in both directions to all traffic from Beacon Street in Boston to Vassar Street in Cambridge. Pedestrians not allowed to watch fireworks from the bridge.

    Memorial Drive from Mass. Ave to the BU Bridge closed to vehicular traffic. Access allowed for patrons going to the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

    Vassar Street in Cambridge from Mass. Ave to Memorial Drive closed to all vehicular traffic. Hyatt patrons and residents granted access.
    Cambridge Parkway closed to all vehicular traffic except for those with handicap placards and plates.

    In Boston, these streets will be closed until the end of the fireworks: Beacon Street, Berkeley Street, Dartmouth Street, Fairfield Street, Hereford Street, and Massachusetts Ave.


    At 10:15 p.m.:

    Third Street in Cambridge becomes a one way from Main Street to Msgr. O'Brien Highway

    Craigie Drawbridge remains closed for about 2 hours to allow traffic to subside

    Smaller boats that can pass under bridge while in down position will be allowed to pass

    Handicap parking information:

    Mass. Eye & Ear Storrow opens at 12 p.m. on July 4 for cars displaying handicap placards and plates. It will close when the area is filled or at 6 p.m., whichever occurs first.

    MBTA handicap shuttle vans will cease operation once the area is filled. Vans for the return trip will park on Storrow Drive eastbound.

    Handicap parking will also be allowed on Cambridge Parkway

    The City of Boston released the list of roads that will be a tow zone, no stopping zone on the following dates:

    June 30- through July 4:


    Beacon Street, even side from Berkeley Street to Clarendon Street

    July 3- through July 4:

    Both sides of Arlington Street from Beacon Street to Commonwealth Avenue,
    Berkeley Street, Clarendon Street, Dartmouth Street, and Exeter Street from Marlborough Street to Back Street,
    Beacon Street from Dartmouth Street to David Mugar Way,
    Back Street, Chestnut Street, Mount Vernon Street, Pinckney Street, and Revere Street from David G. Mugar Way on will be a tow zone, no stopping zone.

    July 4:

    All of Arlington Street, Beacon Street, Berkeley Street, Clarendon Street, Dartmouth Street, Exeter Street, Fairfield Street, Gloucester Street, Hereford Street, Massachusetts Avenue, and Boylston Street will have parking restrictions.

    Mass. State Police remind patrons that viewing fireworks from I-93 is dangerous and prohibited. Troopers will be stationed in the area to ensure there is no one stopping to watch the fireworks.
