Harvard math grad using data to predict Oscar winners

LOS ANGELES — It just takes a little bit of Harvard knowledge math to predict who will be taking home the golden trophies this Sunday at the Oscars.

Harvard math grad Ben Zauzmer published his math-based predictions in The Hollywood Reporter and the numbers are calling for "La La Land" to win it big across several categories.

"Let’s face it: we don’t really need math for this one," Zauzmer writes in regard La La Land winning the Best Original Song Category

His math also predicts a Best Picture win for "La La Land".

Massachusetts' own "Manchester by the Sea" fared well, with Zauzmer's numbers saying he'd win Best Actor.

"Casey Affleck won nearly every critics’ prize, the Golden Globe, and the BAFTA. Denzel Washington is Affleck’s strongest competition thanks to his SAG victory, so don’t be too surprised if the second-place contender finishes in first," he writes.

“Manchester by the Sea” is also most likely to win Best Original Screenplay, but the math is neck and neck with “La La Land”.
We’ll see if Zauzmer’s math holds up this Sunday night at the Academy Awards.
